Dr Samiran Panda Said – need to be careful and alert with the new variant of corona
The new variant B.1.1.529 of the corona virus found in South Africa has been named ‘Omicron’ by the World Health Organization (WHO). Concerns are being expressed about this new variant of Corona. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) scientist Dr Samiran Panda has given a statement regarding this new variant.
According to news agency ANI, ICMR scientist Dr. Samiran Panda said that it is not necessary that always the variant will be fatal due to more mutations. There is a need to be more careful and cautious about this. Apart from this, the number of mutations does not make the virus more infectious.
Rather, it is the structure-function relationship, or the relation of form and function, that has an effect. Having more than one mutation in the virus does not necessarily mean that the virus will fit and become locked in a human cell. Changes in the structure due to heavy mutations can adversely affect the virus to attach to the human cell.
WHO has investigated all this and we need to wait some more time to find out. Whether the infection is increasing or is there a severe form of infection or there are excessive deaths. Keeping all this in mind, WHO has declared it as a Variant of Concern.
Is the new variant of corona spreading really fast? It takes a little more time to know about it. Because of different types of evidence – laboratory-based observation, population-based study is being done.
