The state government has taken action after women committed suicide due to dowry atrocities in Kerala.

The recent suicide of some young women due to dowry atrocities in the state of Kerala has caused great controversy in the state. Thus many women, movie stars and political leaders raised their voices against dowry oppression. Demands also arose that the Dowry Prohibition Act be tightened.

In this situation, the Government of Kerala has amended the Dowry Prohibition Act. In that regard, the State Government has directed all male employees working in the State to submit to the Government a certificate confirming that they have not received dowry after marriage.

Dowry atrocities are rampant in Kerala. State Governor Arif Mohammad Khan had a one-day symbolic fast to raise awareness against dowry. The Government of Kerala, which is deeply aware of the high level of dowry and jewelery purchases at the level of civil servants, has taken a constructive step to curb this.

In this situation, the Government of Kerala has amended the Dowry Prohibition Act. In that regard, the State Government has directed all male employees working in the State to submit to the Government a certificate confirming that they have not received dowry after marriage.

Accordingly, men in government service in Kerala are required to submit a certificate stating that they have not received dowry from the woman’s household during their marriage. It is also advised that the certificate should be signed by the bride and groom’s parents. He was instructed to submit this certificate to their superiors within a month of the marriage. These tasks are coordinated by the Department of Women and Child Welfare. Its Director Anupama has sent a circular to all Government Directorates in Kerala in this regard.

Dowry prevention officers have also been appointed in each district. He has been instructed by the high officials in the respective districts to report every year on the marriage details of those working in their field and the denial of dowry. The Kerala government has also issued a stern warning that government officials will be fined and jailed if they are found to have married for dowry.

Dowry Prohibition Act was enacted in Kerala in 1961.

The form should be signed by the civil servant, the employee’s father, the employee’s wife and father-in-law.  These forms should be obtained from the respective departmental heads, their subordinates and handed over twice a year (April and October) to the concerned District Dowry Prevention Officers.

Also, giving or receiving dowry is a punishable offense in prison. The sentence is not less than 5 years imprisonment, with a fine of Rs 15,000 or a dowry.

State Health Minister Veena George said, “Dowry enforcement officers have been appointed in all districts. Similarly, the district women and child welfare officers in each district will act as law enforcement officers, ”he said.

The Dowry Prohibition Act was enacted in Kerala in 1961. Under this law, buying and giving a dowry is a punishable offense. It is noteworthy that it is illegal under the law to give or agree to give a property, either directly or indirectly, as a property or as a secured security bond.
