The Supreme Court has made it clear that it cannot interfere in the directions given by the Odisha government on the rath yatra of Puri Jagannath.  The Odisha government has ordered a rath yatra on July 12 in Puri alone amid sanctions in the wake of the severe corona epidemic.

However, some devotees have filed petitions in the Odisha High Court seeking directions to the government to conduct rath yatras in Puri as well as Kendrapada and Barghar districts.  The High Court struck them down.

The petitioners then went to the Supreme Court.  The central government has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Odisha government’s decision.

The bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana, which heard the petitions, struck them all down.  “Let us hope that God Himself will make a rath yatra whenever He comes.  Everything is by the grace of God, ”commented CJI NV Ramana.  “I also always go to Puri.  But, it didn’t go away for years.  I worship at home.  In the present circumstances God can be worshiped even from home.  The government of Odisha has taken the right decision in the matter of rath yatra, ”he said.

In fact, even last year, the Supreme Court allowed a rath yatra in Puri alone.  However, it suggested that the rath yatra should be conducted with only 500 people and a curfew should be imposed during the rath yatra.  But, no one ignored those orders.  Devotees came in droves for the rath yatra.
