Sudhanshu Pandey, Secretary, Food and Supplies, said at a press conference here on Tuesday that maize would play a major role in making ethanol from grains.

There is a plan to make 740 crore liters of ethanol from maize. Apart from this , ethanol will also be made from rice etc. There is a plan to make 100 crore liters of ethanol from grains during the next one year.

He said that for this the proposals of industries are being approved and loans are also being made available. Under this scheme, new distilleries will be set up in rural areas so that food grains will get a better market and people will also get employment.

The country produces about 280 lakh tonnes of maize annually. Of this, only 20 percent of maize is used for industrial purposes. Ethanol is produced in good quantity from maize and it is also cheap.

Shri Pandey said that there is a plan to make 223 crore liters of ethanol from sugarcane this year and this will enable the mixing of up to 8.5 percent ethanol in petrol.
