The Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) has suggested various changes in the proposed consumer protection (e-commerce) rules. In a suggestion sent to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs on Wednesday, the forum said that the government should also make provisions for protection of businessmen and service providers associated with e-commerce companies. Also, e-courts should be set up for redressal of consumer complaints.

Swadeshi Jagran Manch said, there is a general perception that these rules apply to all parties involved in e-commerce, which is not correct. This is because the Consumer Protection Act does not apply to traders and service providers.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs should clarify the position on this subject. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade should make suitable rules for the protection of traders and service providers.

Welcoming Compulsory Registration of E-Commerce Units The organization has termed the mandatory registration of  e-commerce units as a welcome step under the proposed rules. He said that DPIIT should lay emphasis on capacity building for the purpose of checking and compliance in the rules by creating a monitoring mechanism.
