Hibi Eden MP has written to President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah requesting an immediate solution to the problem of Kochi Lakshadweep residents.
Hibi Eden letter to the prime minister.
The letter pointed out that the new reforms of the Lakshadweep new administrator, Praful Patel, who was appointed last December, have led to widespread protests among the island people.
The powers of the elected District Panchayats were curtailed and the Administrator took control of the Departments of Education, Health, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries.
On the island, which has a population of about 70,000, most of the people depend on government jobs or fishing for their livelihood.
He points out that after the appointment of the new administrator, a large number of people were fired from government contract jobs and fishermen’s sheds were demolished under coastal law.
Reforms, including banning those with more than two children from running in panchayat elections, are also provoking protests.
Goonda act misuse in Lakshadweep.
People are also concerned that the implementation of coal laws such as the Goonda Act will be widely misused in an island region where crime is very low.
It is against the interests and culture of the islanders to end trade with the Beypore port and move all cargo through Mangalore, to allow liquor outlets in the name of tourism, to ban beef and to exclude meat dishes from Anganwadi children’s lunch.
Hibi Eden says the request is that the central government take action to stop such oppression
