The Katalattai farm set up by the company at Kilinochchi-Gaudarimunai, Kalmunai, despite the protests of the local fishermen without any permission, is still operating without any hindrance.

Meanwhile, Minister Douglas Devananda has instructed to immediately curb illegal Katalattai farming activities in the Jaffna-Kurunegala area.

Various parties have already lodged complaints in this regard.

The use of trawl boats is prohibited in areas other than those identified by the National Aquatic Resources Research Institute (NARA).

However, the Fisheries Ministry said in a statement that about 39 tugboats were involved in the Katalattai or sea cucumber industry in violation of the Fisheries Association regulations.

Following this, Minister Douglas Devananda said that all prohibited fishing practices should be curtailed and called on the Fisheries Department to take immediate action to control those engaged in Katalattai using trawlers.  District Chief J.  Sudhakaran has been instructed by the Fisheries Minister.
