The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Benjamin List and David WC Macmillan. Both scientists have been given this honor for making “a simple device for the manufacture of molecules”. He has been given this honor for his remarkable work in developing a new method for manufacturing molecules known as “asymmetric organocatalysis”. The discoveries of these two scientists “started a completely new way of thinking about how to put chemical molecules together,” said Pernilla Wittung-Staffshed, a member of the Chemistry Nobel Committee.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Benjamin List, a German scientist from the Max Planck Institute, and David W.C. Macmillan, a scientist at Princeton University. Macmillan was born in Scotland. He has been selected for this honor for his remarkable work in developing a new method for manufacturing molecules called ‘asymmetric organocatalysis’.
The Nobel Committee stated that List and Macmillan independently developed a new method of catalysis in the year 2000. ‘It is already greatly benefiting mankind,’ said Pernilla Witung-Staffshed, a member of the Nobel committee. Following the announcement of the award, List said the award was a “huge surprise” for him. “I didn’t expect it at all,” he said. He said that when the call came from Sweden, he was vacationing in Amsterdam with his family.
List said he did not initially know that Macmillan was working on the same subject. He said he thought his attempt might be a bad idea until it worked. He said, ‘I thought it could be something big.’ It is common for many scientists working in related fields to share the award.

“This new toolbox is widely used today, for example in drug discovery and production of fine chemicals, and is already bringing great benefits to mankind,” Wittung-Staffshed said. German scientist Benjamin List and Scottish chemist Macmillan worked independently. This is the third Nobel Prize to be awarded this week that the two prizes are sharing. The two winners will share the prize money of 10 million krone (£842,611).
Committee member Prof Peter Somfi from Lund University in Sweden described the research as a “game-changer” and said, “We have found a new tool in organic chemistry, and it may prove to be of greatest benefit to mankind.”
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been given since 1901
Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel had said to give these prizes in his will in 1896, a year before his death. A total of 187 persons have been awarded this highest award in Chemistry since 1901. Of these 187 awardees, only seven are women. British biochemist Frederick Sanger has won the award twice, in 1958 and 1980.
So far 72 scientists in the United States have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Germany and the UK are in second place with 34-34 award winners.

The Nobel Prize Committee on Monday announced the awarding of the Nobel Prize in medicine to American citizens David Julius and Ardum Pataputian. Three scientists from Japan, Germany and Italy were selected on Tuesday for this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics for their work on complex systems, including increasing the understanding of climate change. The names of Nobel Prize winners in the fields of literature, peace and economics will be announced in the coming days.
