The fourth generation is also doing the same work, Kuthrel village of Durg district is a village with a population of only four and a half thousand. Now the fourth generation of some of the houses here are making effigies of Ravana, Meghnath, Kumbhakaran. The making of giant effigies of Ravana in the village was started by an elderly Bisoharam Sahu here. He was a carpenter by profession and used to play the role of Ravana in the village’s Ramlila troupe. He got so engrossed in his character that he learned to make an effigy of Ravana for Dussehra and gradually the demand for his effigies increased. Then Loman Singh Sahu of his own family also learned this work and thus this tradition continued in his family. Now the children of his family have also learned to make an effigy of Ravana.

Ravana’s effigies go all over the state, Ravana’s effigies made by the Sahu family go to about 10 districts including the capital Raipur, Bilaspur, apart from the fort. This time with him alone, 25 committees have ordered to prepare effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhakaran. But this time Ravana’s stature has been reduced due to the covid protocol. Where once 70 feet effigies of Ravana were made, only 50 feet effigies are being made there. They are also preparing effigies for committees of several districts and villages in and around Birgaon in Raipur, including Bhilai-Durg.

With the women of the Sahu family also take part in this whole work of making effigies of Ravana. In this work, the women of the house work shoulder to shoulder with the male artisans. The cost of an effigy is about 25 thousand rupees. Let us tell you that bamboo, old sack putta and paper are used to prepare the body of Ravana, but it takes a lot of hard work to make the mask. For this, a clay mold is first prepared, on which the paper is decorated and applied. It takes about 2 months to make an effigy of Ravana. In these 60 days, these huge body effigies of Ravana are prepared with full devotion and devotion to Ram.
